Gunderson Client EvolutionaryScale Team Joins Biohub in Strategic Transaction with Chan Zuckerberg Initiative
Gunderson Dettmer represented client EvolutionaryScale, a frontier research lab building AI models for biological research, in a strategic transaction with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative whereby the EvolutionaryScale team will join Biohub, a 501c3 medical research organization founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.
EvolutionaryScale’s Co-founder and Chief Scientist Alex Rives, a pioneer in AI language modeling for biology, will serve as head of science and lead scientific strategy across experimental biology, data and artificial intelligence.
The combined team of scientists, engineers and AI researchers will develop the datasets, laboratory technologies and modeling innovations needed to build the next generation of AI systems to power the future of biological discovery and disease research.
In the announcement of this partnership, Alex Rives said, "Advances in artificial intelligence are already starting to give us new tools to understand and engineer biology. As we bring together frontier artificial intelligence, with frontier biology it will become possible to build predictive models of biology that could greatly accelerate the rate at which fundamental new scientific discoveries can be made."
The Gunderson deal team was led by corporate partner Melissa Marks and included corporate associates Caroline Ceriello, Lawrence Ho, Jaime Lacson, strategic transactions and licensing partner Aaron Rubin and associates Erica Davis, Christina Chen and Paroma Mallick, executive compensation partner Emily Cabrera and associate Megan Canepari, tax partner Jace Clegg and associate Morgan Otway, M&A partners Andrew Luh and David Moore and data privacy associate Cecilia Jeong.
