
Tyler L. Kirtley
Tyler is a fund formation partner in our Boston office.
Tyler’s practice focuses on the structuring, formation and operation of venture capital and other private equity funds and their related general partner and management company entities. His fund clients include some of the most successful venture capital firms in the country, as well as emerging managers seeking to build name-brand investment firms. These clients lean on Tyler for his market knowledge, experience and laser-focus on advancing practical, business-oriented solutions to complex issues. Tyler draws particular joy from the long-lasting personal relationships he forms with his clients, and for the opportunity to help influence the growth and trajectory of each firm that he advises.
As fund counsel, Tyler advises clients on prevailing market terms and trends, including for both technology and life sciences fund formations; supports clients on their approach to fundraising, marketing materials and closing planning; leads legal negotiations with LPs, through which he is able to leverage his significant experience working across from financial investors, strategic investors, public pension plans and sovereign wealth funds; and manages streamlined fund closings. Tyler also advises clients on carried interest arrangements, vesting and other internal matters, including firm ownership transitions. Finally, Tyler represents clients in all aspects of their day-to-day operations, including fund accounting, regulatory compliance and long-term fundraising planning. Tyler has recently closed funds for clients such as Boldstart Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Evolution Equity Partners, OrbiMed Advisors and Spark Capital.
In addition to his fund formation practice, Tyler has worked on numerous transactions involving the purchase and sale of ownership interests in professional sports teams. Most notably, Tyler advised long-time client Boston Basketball Partners in its 2025 sale of the Boston Celtics to an investor group led by William Chisholm.
Originally from Kentucky, Tyler now lives in Newton, Massachusetts with his wife, two daughters and an incorrigible beagle. Tyler holds a J.D. from the UC Berkeley School of Law, where he graduated as a member of the Order of the Coif and spent a year as a visiting student at Harvard Law School. Tyler earned a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University. Prior to attending law school, Tyler spent two years as a high school math teacher with Teach For America in Oakland, California.
