Joe is the firm’s Chief Innovation Officer. In this role, he leads the firm’s innovation strategy, with a focus on transforming our service delivery platform to provide a more modern experience for both internal and external stakeholders.
Joe has authored dozens of articles on startup-related issues, the business of law, legal technology and the future of the legal industry. He speaks regularly on these topics at industry and academic conferences, law firms and law schools. Joe’s academic work has been cited by SEC commissioners and staff in public speeches and reports on numerous occasions. Joe is currently a Lecturer in Law at The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School where he co-teaches a Startups & Venture Capital bootcamp with Professor Elizabeth Pollman. He has also guest lectured at Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, NYU Law and Cornell Law School. As a member of the entrepreneurship faculty at Central Michigan University—where he taught several courses in a Master of Entrepreneurial Ventures program—Joe received the College of Business Administration's Hazleton Faculty Excellence Award.
Joe serves as a director on the boards of three non-profit organizations: the Open Cap Table Coalition, the Institute for the Advancement of Legal and Ethical AI, and Pro Bono Net. Joe co-founded and helps lead the Open Cap Table Coalition, a 501(c)(6) industry consortium of key organizations from across the venture ecosystem focused on improving the interoperability, transparency, and portability of private company capitalization table data. The coalition is the first open source initiative in the space to include the top startup-focused law firms, key software vendors, major financial institutions and other industry stakeholders. He serves as a member of the inaugural board of directors of the Institute for the Advancement of Legal and Ethical AI (ALEA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit supporting socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable AI through open research and education. And, he most recently joined the board of Pro Bono Net (PBN), a nonprofit organization that enhances access to justice by leveraging technology and fostering collaboration to provide legal resources and tools for underserved populations. Through its platforms, such as LawHelp.org and Probono.net, PBN connects millions of people with legal aid and supports thousands of pro bono volunteers annually.
Joe was previously a senior associate at Gunderson and left to join Thomson Reuters as a Senior Legal Editor at Practical Law, the premier online legal know-how service for business lawyers. At Practical Law, Joe created content and technology solutions enabling thousands of law firm and in-house attorney customers in the startup and venture capital space to deliver services more efficiently and effectively. Joe began his legal career as a securities lawyer with Simpson Thacher in New York.
