We counsel clients on a broad range of business law issues, including the general representation of private and public companies, venture capital and private equity fund formation, intellectual property and strategic alliances, cross-border transactions, public offerings, representation of venture capital and private equity investors, mergers and acquisitions, representation of investment bankers, tax, executive compensation, employment law. Comprehensive business law counseling requires attorneys with diverse skill sets and perspectives, and ability to integrate real world experience and substantive legal knowledge. Our attorneys are staffed on client-centric teams that remain constant during our relationship with a client. We staff our client teams as leanly as possible—we don't believe in multilayered hierarchies, so most client teams consist of a partner and one or two associates. Every attorney on a team develops a deep understanding of our client’s business and the transactions in which the client is involved. We want you to develop and advance as quickly as possible and therefore we encourage associates to assume significant responsibility—early in your career at Gunderson Dettmer you will work directly with clients and assume increasingly challenging roles in important transactions. We believe that this approach will best enable you to gain significant experience and build outstanding lawyering skills early in your career.

We are committed to providing our attorneys with exceptional professional development and growth. The cornerstone of this commitment is our client team approach and our training and mentoring programs.

We believe that the most valuable attorney training comes from hands-on experience. We therefore make every effort to use client work as mentoring opportunities—there is no better way to learn and improve than by working with a senior attorney in the heat of a deal. We believe our client-centric and team-oriented approach to the services we provide fosters an environment of consistent and regular feedback for our associates. We also have a mandatory training program of classes throughout the year, with a particular emphasis on classes in the Fall, after our first-year associates join us, and in the summer, during our Summer Associate Program. In addition, we provide topical training sessions throughout the year, presented by partners or outside experts, and encourage attendance at relevant training programs provided by outside organizations. To further assist our associates’ professional development, each new associate is provided with partner and associate mentors. In addition to the day-to-day mentoring we provide, our partnership meets semi-annually to review associate performance and provide feedback to our associates regarding their career development.
